What is Tinnitus and why do I have it?

Tinnitus is a condition in which you hear noise in your ears which is not present in the surrounding environment. You may have different sounds like buzzing, humming, ringing, roaring, whooshing, etc. Tinnitus can be extremely annoying and can even disturb your sleep.

Tinnitus is a very common issue. In fact, it is the most common disorder of the hearing system. Many people who have tinnitus have never been diagnosed and treated for it.

The good news is that tinnitus can be treated and cured. However, not all people with tinnitus can get a permanent cure.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the sound of noise in the ears that is not caused by any external sound. The word tinnitus is derived from two Latin words meaning “ringing” and “inner ear”. It is a condition in which the person hears a high-pitched noise, which is called a “ringing”. The noise can be heard in one ear or both the ears.


There are many reasons for developing tinnitus. Some of the most common causes of tinnitus are:

3. Menopause

4. Head injury

5. Hearing loss

6. Ear infection

7. Dizziness

8. High blood pressure

9. Stroke

10. Diabetes

11. Thyroid problems

12. Excessive use of alcohol

13. Medications
